Schematic of anti-EGFR antibody cetuximab conjugated to lipid-encapsulated nonfouling SPIO nanoparticles. Maghemite nanoparticles were modified with maleimide through reaction with sulfo-SMCC; a thiolated antibody was prepared by treating cetuximab with iminothiolane. The maleimide-functionalized SPIO nanoparticles were mixed with the thiolated antibody solution to form antibody-conjugated SPIO nanoparticles.
