SEM imaging of the Caco-2/Raji B (a) Caco-2/HT29-MTX (b) co-culture exposed to CuO NMs for 24 h. The co-cultures were exposed to cell culture medium (control) or 12.68 Cu µg/cm2 of CuO NMs for 24 h. The cells were washed, fixed, dehydrated, dried and examined by SEM. Specimens (i) and (ii) are control co-cultures imaged at magnifications of ×5000 and ×10,000 respectively. (iii) and (iv) are co-cultures exposed to 12.68 Cu µg/cm2 of CuO NMs imaged at magnifications of ×5000 and ×10,000 respectively. Representative images are shown. Red arrows indicate area of shortened or absent microvilli
