Neutralization of hemolysins secreted by S. pneumoniae, S. pyogenes and S. dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis by liposomes saturated with cholesterol. Filtered supernatants obtained from cultures of S. pneumoniae (Pn), S. pyogenes (GAS) and S. dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis (GGS) display potent hemolytic activities (a, b). Ch:Sm-liposomes (Ch = 66 mol/%) completely neutralize hemolytic activities of recombinant PLY and SLO as well as the activities of Pn supernatants (c, d). These liposomes provide only partial protection against GAS and GGS supernatants (e–h). Error bars = Mean ± SD. N ≥ 3
