The airway epithelium is a continuous cell layer that mainly consists of epithelial cells (ciliary cells), basal cells, goblet cells, club cells, and pulmonary neuroendocrine cells (PNEC). Alveoli are the smallest passageway in the respiratory system, which consist of type I and type II pneumocytes. Type 1 pneumocytes allow gas exchange, while type II pneumocytes are responsible for secreting surfactants. Alveolar macrophages (AMs) and dendritic cells are responsible for clearing up debris through phagocytosis [16, 17]
