Biogenesis of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in eukaryotic host cells. Three types of extracellular vesicles have been characterized to date and are shown: apoptotic bodies (50–5000 nm) produced by apoptotic cells, microvesicles (50–1000 nm) formed through outward budding and fission of the plasma membrane, and exosomes (40–160 nm) released from eukaryotic cells via the fusion of multivesicular bodies with the plasma membrane.
