Focal adhesion mediated regulation of nanotopographies on cellular functional phenotype. Firstly, the distribution and quantity of RGD sequences in ECM proteins influenced by nanostructure on substrate are perceived by integrins. Then, the focal adhesion complexes transmit nanotopographical information to the nucleus via the cytoskeleton and related cascades. Finally, the nuclear skeleton and gene expression are altered accordingly, promoting the changes in macrophage polarization and osteoclastic differentiation
